Most of the things I&#8217;ve written I&#8217;ve kept to myself, other than the occasional online post. I didn&#8217;t bring a large social media following or a subscriber list from an active newsletter. I just told some friends and family I was doing it, had my friend Andy create a logo and header for me, and launched. On day one I had 2 subscribers, and I&#8217;m pretty sure one of them was me (I have trouble understanding the dashboard statistics).</p><p>Over the last 90 days, I&#8217;ve published ten articles (nine of my own and one guest post) and one podcast episode. Those eleven posts have generated over 2600 views, and I now have 63 subscribers (pretty sure one of them is still me, but whatever). Thanks to all who have read and shared. It&#8217;s a bit terrifying pressing the &#8220;publish&#8221; button, releasing one&#8217;s thoughts, and time, and creative energy into the ether. The intrusive thoughts generally make their way in immediately. </p><p><em>What if I wrote something that wasn&#8217;t true? Or stupid? Or worse yet&#8230;what if it&#8217;s just&#8230;bad? Anybody could see this! Or again, worse yet, what if nobody sees it?</em></p><p>So this is an appreciation post as we hit the three-month anniversary and pass 2500 article views. But this spring also marks another important anniversary and milestone. In the early spring of 2021 I approached my good friend, Justin LaRocque, about starting a podcast together. I didn&#8217;t have large ambitions. Just the two of us, talking about Bible stories, which might be a cool resource for the little church we attend in Springfield, Ohio. </p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg" width="600" height="600" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:600,&quot;width&quot;:600,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;No photo description available.&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="No photo description available." title="No photo description available." srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!50A5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F265e64dc-5172-45ed-bab8-9bad8190f9b1_600x600.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>That was five years and 10,000 downloads ago. And sometime this month, we will release the 100th episode of One Good Story. I honestly am not sure I thought we would have anything left to say at this point. But it turns out I really like telling Bible stories&#8230;to the point that I created a whole other medium so I could write about them as well. Despite covering the same material, the podcast is a much different endeavor than my written articles. Justin injects a level of spontaneity and color that keeps me from getting too predictable. We meander a lot more before we arrive at the point. And sometimes the discussions don&#8217;t fully resolve. But I think that&#8217;s what happens when two good friends get together to share a story. They laugh. They quibble over details. They wonder how the other could possibly have arrived at their conclusion. And somewhere along the way, they fall into deeply meaningful conversation.</p><p>At least that&#8217;s what I hope people have gotten out of the first 99 episodes. You can find them all here on Substack now.<a class="footnote-anchor" data-component-name="FootnoteAnchorToDOM" id="footnote-anchor-1" href="#footnote-1" target="_self">1</a> We&#8217;ve gone over the big picture of the Bible, talked about the parables, the weird stories&#8230;tales of prophets, priests, and kings. And we interviewed a bunch of our friends about their own favorite Bible stories. In a way, it&#8217;s the true origin story of <em>Reclaiming the Narrative.</em> I&#8217;m going to end this post by sharing what I wrote five years ago when we decided to launch the podcast. I think you&#8217;ll find the seeds that have sprouted into all of this. And hopefully, it makes sense as to why we can&#8217;t stop talking about these good stories.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" months ago Justin Larocque, Andy Ingram, and I began working on a project together. It was something Justin and I had messed around with for our church last winter before the pandemic started. But with the world going into lockdown, we had to cut it short, and I wasn&#8217;t sure we&#8217;d come back to it. </p><p>But a couple things happened during the painful months that followed that made me reevaluate how important this was to me. First of all, the isolation made me realize how desperately I need community. Specifically, I need friends with whom I can sit face-to-face and share the things that matter most to me. In that regard, Justin and Andy have provided some sense of a return to normalcy that has been a great comfort. Secondly, as I&#8217;ve pondered the loss of my dad and have found myself wishing I had more of him here (more pictures, videos, letters...anything), I&#8217;ve discovered my own need for a creative outlet, and a desire to ensure the things I believe at a fundamental level I don&#8217;t leave unsaid. </p><p>One of those essentials for me is a love for the Christian Scriptures that we call the Bible. I grew up hearing it, reading it, studying it, and for the past 15 years have had many opportunities to teach it. In the past couple years I have fallen in love with how incredible the story-telling is throughout its pages. Despite being written by dozens of different authors over thousands of years, these narratives build upon each other, adding layer after layer to the unfolding drama of God&#8217;s love for us. Sometimes, I think in an attempt to simplify things, we reduce scripture to a series of theological truth statements or moral platitudes. At its best, this results in a shallow faith that leaves little sense of wonder. At its worst, the bible becomes a weapon for the ambitious or the angry to prop up or tear down political and philosophical ideologies that have very little to do with Jesus.</p><p>Everyone loves a good story, and the bible is full of them. And something this beautifully written deserves to be well told. So in five days, on July 19th, Justin, Andy, and I are launching One Good Story: The Podcast, where we will attempt to do just that. </p><p>I hope you&#8217;ll listen.</p></div><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://timvoltz.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Reclaiming the Narrative!
